Welcome

Many of us have dreams about quitting the rat race and going back to the land, to enjoy a simpler life. Unfortunately a mortgage and kids normally mean that this is impossible. Plus land isn’t cheap in England, especially in the South-East, even if it is Essex.

Earning enough from this lifestyle is also very difficult but the dream keeps niggling away. Stories in the media, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and repeats of the ‘Good Life’ drag the idea of growing your own stuff into the conscious mind on an almost daily basis.

Self-reliance is an important factor in our lives. It’s the reason we set-up our own businesses as it gives us as much control as possible over our future. It also means that we worked towards our own dreams rather than someone else’s.

However 20 years of commuting to London or further afield had left it’s mark and brothers Richard and Daniel decided that they would try something different as well as have a day job (go to ‘About Us’ if you want to know more).

The upshot is that between us we rent a small field where we raise animals, rent an allotment where we grow our own vegetables and have given over some of our gardens to growing food. Even the front garden, hence Food On Our Doorstep, or F.O.O.D for short.

This site is a glorified blog on what we do, the successes and disappointments, and hopefully you will think that you too could take the first steps towards growing some of your own stuff! Flogging any surplus will hopefully be a feature of this site at a later date too.
